CORRECTION TO RECENT NEWS REPORTS
Two articles recently appeared on the website of the Coventry Observer and the Coventry Telegraph. Between them they contain inaccuracies (eg suggesting Wesleys café was run by volunteers when it employed staff). The articles also name two of our employees, without having their permission, incorrectly suggesting that they are the managers of the café, it is also stated that the principal cause of the café’s closure was the Coronavirus.
In reality Wesleys café had been running at a loss for several years and the losses were accumulating long before the Coronavirus pandemic. The management group, which consists of volunteer trustees of the church and is chaired by Rev Stephen Willey, the minister at Methodist Central Hall, looked for ways of saving the café, but it had reached a point where the café was starting to create serious financial problems for the church.
Rev Stephen says, “The management group of volunteer trustees, chaired by myself, felt that the café’s losses were starting to have a serious impact on the whole church. Our lettings and members’ contributions, generously given in weekly offerings, were supporting the café as we attempted to keep it going. In the end we accepted that the situation was unsustainable and we had to close the café permanently. We are still very conscious of the wonderful volunteers the café worked with and we hope that we will find ways to meet up together in the future, it just won’t be through Wesleys café . The Coronavirus was certainly not the principal cause of Wesleys closure.
After the crisis is over the church will reopen and we will welcome back those who wish to re-let spaces in our building, many of which are community focused charities, but Wesleys café will not reopen.”
